The origins of Lincoln Heights, Ohio, trace back to the 1920s, when Black families, many employed at industrial plants such as Wright Aeronautical and later General Electric were systematically denied access to housing in surrounding all-white communities. In response, these families began purchasing land in what was then an unincorporated area just outside Cincinnati’s city limits. The land was sold by the Haley-Livingston Land Company as part of the Cincinnati Industrial Subdivision, one of the few places where Black residents could buy property and build homes.

With little to no infrastructure or municipal services, residents organized and lobbied for the right to govern themselves. Their original petition for incorporation in 1939 proposed a much larger area that included valuable industrial zones. However, over time, Hamilton County and neighboring municipalities strategically annexed the most economically beneficial portions, especially those containing industrial plants and commercial property.

By the time Lincoln Heights was finally incorporated in 1946, it represented only about 10% of the originally proposed area. What remained became the Village of Lincoln Heights, a proud and determined Black American community was built on resilience, self-determination, and a commitment to shaping its own future. Today, its legacy calls on us all to honor that spirit by preserving its history, uplifting its stories, and continuing the work of building a brighter, united tomorrow.
